As a member of the European Union, the Hungarian passport authority only issues biometric passports - these incorporate electronically scanned fingerprints. This requires applicants to apply in person in Hungary at one of the Document Offices [okmányiroda] (http://www.nyilvantarto.hu/en/), or at a Hungarian embassy or consulate (but not honorary consulates), with the necessary documents (existing passport or Citizenship Certificate and Hungarian certificates).
Passports can be renewed in person in Canberra (17 Beale Cres, Deakin, ACT 2600, allow 6-8 weeks) or in Budapest (Budapest XIII. district. Visegrádi u. 110-112., allow 3-4 weeks).
You will need your existing Hungarian passport (which can be returned to you if so requested) and your Hungarian documents (birth, marriage, divorce certificates).
The processing in Budapest takes up to 28 days. In cases of urgency, for double the fee, the processing takes up to 8 days. If you don't have a permanent address in Hungary, then you submit your application in Hungary at the Central Passport Office (1133 Budapest, Visegrádi u. 110-112), where it is advisable to make an appointment ahead of time by email: idopontfoglalas@ahiv.hu to avoid the queues. If you are not in Hungary long enough to pick up your new passport (and you have a New Zealand or other passport with which to return to New Zealand), you can ask for your new passport to be sent to your New Zealand address via the Embassy in Canberra. If you have a New Zealand residency or work permit in your old passport, you will need to have your permit transferred to your new passport.
Note: If your Hungarian passport has already expired (even by one day), you can only renew it by submitting another citizenship application. (This will add about 3 months to the processing time.)
If a passport is lost or stolen it needs to be reported to the Police and consequently to the Consulate–General in Wellington or the Consulate in Auckland, whichever is nearer, where an official file is prepared based on the police record. The lost passport can be replaced with a temporary travel document issued by the Embassy in Canberra if necessary.
Passports issued to children under 5 years of age are valid for 3 years, 5-18 years for 5 years and over 18 years of age for either 5 or 10 years.
Your Hungarian passports is evidence of your Hungarian citizenship, so it is important to submit your passport renewal application before your passport expires.
Existing non-biometric passports remain valid until their expiry, even with the new passports in circulation.
